I've heard some version of this question a number of times, and it usually goes something like:

The earliest disciples writing about Jesus, seemed to expect His return within their own lifetime, or not too far past it. It's now been over 2,000 years since then.

So either the timeline was misunderstood by the people writing it down, or there's something about "soon" that isn't being read correctly, or, for some, this is treated as reason enough to doubt the reliability of the whole account.

I don't think this is something that deserves a dismissive answer, and I also don't think it's resolved by just quoting "with the Lord a day is like a thousand years" and considering everything settled. That verse is relevant, and I'll get into it later, but leaning on it alone can feel like avoiding the actual weight of the question. I want to actually contemplate why the wait has been this long, and whether "long" is even the right way to be measuring it in the first place. I think looking at how God has worked with people in the past, specifically how long He's asked people to wait before, is a reasonable place to start.

This Isn't the First Long Wait

I think it helps to actually look at how long God worked with just one people, Israel, before Christ ever entered the picture. From the call of Abraham to the birth of Jesus, that's somewhere around 2,000 years, and honestly, probably longer if we had fully accurate dating for some of the earlier periods. That's not a short stretch. That's covenant, exile, restoration, silence, prophets, more silence, all stacked on top of each other, generation after generation, with one specific nation.

So when I hear "it's been 2,000 years and He hasn't returned," I find myself asking, compared to what? Compared to what timeline are we deciding that's too long? Because if the only real precedent we have is how God has worked before, and that precedent is a 2,000+ year relationship with Israel before the incarnation even happened, then 2,000 years doesn't look that unusual. It looks actually more close to normal.

There's a verse in Habakkuk that's relevant here, where the prophet is told to write the vision down because it's for an appointed time, and even though it may seem to be delayed, to wait for it, because it will come and won't be late (Habakkuk 2:3).

For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
    it speaks of the end
    and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
    it will certainly come
    and will not delay.

That was written to someone who already felt like the wait was too long, in his own moment, long before Christ, long before the Gentiles were ever in view. The feeling of "why hasn't this happened yet" isn't a new problem believers are running into for the first time now. It's actually quite old.

The Shift at Christ: A New Clock Starts, Not the Same One Ending

Here's where I think the framing usually goes wrong. People treat the whole span of Abraham to now, as one countdown that's just been dragging on and on. But I don't think that's actually the case. Something changed at the cross and at Pentecost. It wasn't the same clock ticking. It seems closer to a new one starting.

Up until Christ, this was largely one nation being walked through covenant, law, exile, and restoration. After Pentecost, the invitation opens up to the Gentiles, to all nations, not just the one that had been carried this whole time. Paul talks about this directly in Romans, saying a partial hardening has come on Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in (Romans 11:25). That phrase, "until the full number," isn't a countdown with a fixed duration. It reads to me like an open, ongoing ingathering.

So if we're going to be fair about comparing timelines, I don't think it's right to hold up Israel's 2,000+ years against Gentile history and call that lopsided or unjust. Because we're not a couple hundred years into this, and it's actually quite symmetrical at the moment.

Depending on where you start counting, from Pentecost onward, we're pushing past 2,000 years ourselves now. The Gentile era isn't some short end of the story. It's been running long enough that it actually mirrors the length of what Israel walked through.

Direct Answer to "Soon"

I still think it's worth addressing the word itself, because "soon" is the actual sticking point for a lot of people, not just the total length of time. Peter deals with this directly, and it's worth noting he's responding to people mocking this exact question in his own time, asking where the promise of His coming is, since everything just seems to be continuing on the way it always has (2 Peter 3:4). His answer isn't to argue the math. It's to say that with the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like a day, and that He isn't slow about the promise, He's patient, not wanting anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:8-9).

I said earlier I didn't want to lean on that verse as the whole answer, and I still don't think it's the whole answer, but I don't want to undersell it either. It's not just a vague appeal to "God's time is different, so stop asking." It's specifically pointing at the reason for the wait, patience, and pointing at who it's for, people who haven't come to repentance yet. That's a very different claim than "the timeline doesn't really matter." It's saying the timeline is being held open on purpose, for a purpose.

I also don't think what Peter is doing here resembles coping either, and I think that's worth saying directly. If Peter were coping with a delay he didn't have an answer for, the natural move would be what people typically do when a timeline gets uncomfortable, quietly push it back a little. Buy some room. Instead, he does the opposite. He openly puts a thousand years on the table as a single "day" to the Lord. That's not a small hedge. For someone who had given his entire life to this, who by this point had likely already seen the cost of that commitment up close, that's a strange thing to say out loud if the goal was simply to keep people hopeful and engaged. If anything, I'd expect the opposite instinct, a fear that saying something like that could cause people to lose heart and walk away entirely. He says it anyway. That reads to me less like someone managing expectations and more like someone stating what he actually believed to be true, even knowing it might cost him some of his audience.

There's also this moment right before the ascension where the disciples ask Jesus directly, "is now when you're restoring the kingdom?", and He tells them it isn't for them to know the times or seasons the Father has set by His own authority (Acts 1:7). The apostles themselves, people who walked with Him, ate with Him, watched Him crucified and then alive again, asked this same basic question and were told plainly it wasn't theirs to know. So if the earliest disciples didn't get a firm timeline, I'm not sure why we'd expect to have one either, or why not having one now should be read as something gone wrong.

God's Character Makes this Not Surprising

There's an older pattern behind this patience too, one that I think actually explains why Peter can say what he says with that much confidence. You might recall when Abraham bargains with God over Sodom, asking if He would spare the city for fifty righteous people, then forty five, then all the way down to ten (Genesis 18:23-32). God agrees each time. Ten people, in one city, was enough to hold back judgment. Now stretch that out to an entire planet, billions of people spread across every nation the gospel has reached or is still reaching. If ten was enough to spare one city, I don't think it's a stretch to say a faithful remnant, however small it might look from where we're standing, could be enough reason for Him to keep holding the door open on the whole earth. I don't believe God to the the type of person to shut the door on someone He sees running to it for safety. I dare say, I believe, not even on a single person. I believe He would hold the entire world up, for a single lost sheep still seeking. Because that's just how glorious, righteous, and faithfully loving He is.

That's the same feeling Elijah has in the cave, when he tells God, "I'm the only one left, they've torn down the altars, killed the prophets, and now they're after me too" (1 Kings 19:10). It felt to him like faithfulness had run out entirely, like he was the last one standing. And God's answer isn't to agree with him. It's to tell him there are seven thousand who haven't bowed the knee, people Elijah didn't even know existed (1 Kings 19:18). I think that's worth remembering any time it feels like the whole world has become unrighteous, like faith is thin enough that surely this can't go on much longer. It can feel that way and still not be an accurate reading of how much patience a handful of faithful people is worth to God.

The Parables That Already Expected a Delay

There's also the parables Jesus told directly, that already built a wait into the story. The ten virgins, waiting for a bridegroom, who doesn't show up when expected. Where some prepared for the wait and some did not (Matthew 25:1-13). The parable of the talents, where the master goes away and it's specifically said he was gone a long time before he returns to settle accounts (Matthew 25:19). These aren't stories where the delay is treated as a problem to be explained. The delay is just built into the plot as normal, and just an accepted part of the context.

What stands out to me too is how the delay is actually portrayed inside these stories. The virgins who weren't ready aren't caught off guard by a short wait, they're presented as drowsy, worn down, running low on oil, almost annoyed the bridegroom hasn't shown up yet. That's not the reaction you have when someone is ten minutes late. That's the reaction you have when you're genuinely starting to run out of patience, maybe even starting to run out of reasons for why it's taking this long at all. Jesus is the one telling this story, and He's the one who chose to portray the wait that way, as long enough to actually wear on people, not as some brief pause before the expected moment.

That matters to me, because it means the idea of a wait, possibly a long one, wasn't something the early church stumbled into and had to retroactively explain away once "soon" stopped feeling "soon". Jesus told these stories ahead of time, with the wait (a long one) already assumed as part of them, and already assumed to be long enough to test people's patience. The emphasis in both isn't on guessing how long the wait would be. It's on what condition you're found in when it ends, whether you had oil for your lamp, whether you did something with what you were given. The point of both parables is readiness, not some time table.

A Caution: God Isn't Required to Work in Symmetry

I want to be careful here too, because I don't think the Israel comparison is meant to work as some kind of formula, where we can now just expect a matching 2,000 year span for the Gentile era and treat that as settled. It's not meant to be a formula, but rather, precedent. It shows a long wait like this is within how God has already worked before, not that we now have some predictable countdown. Our wait could be shorter than Israel's. It could be longer (In my opinion longer makes the most sense). I don't think we actually know, and I'm not sure we're supposed to.

Because of that, I don't think we're really in a position to call the current wait "too long," questionably or otherwise. Not because it's wrong to ask the question, I think it's fair, but because we don't have the standing to measure it against anything with any real confidence.

Salvation Isn't Dependent on Time

I also think it's worth saying plainly that our salvation was never actually contingent on the timing of the final return. Human history, even just looking at Israel's own history, moves in these recurring cycles, judgment, revival, repentance, falling away, and starting over again. Every generation is living inside one of those cycles, whether or not it happens to be the finale. That was true for people in the early centuries, it's been true in the centuries since, and it's true now.

There's that verse about Him coming like a thief in the night, and I think it's worth reading seriously in multiple ways. Readiness is not supposed to depend on someone correctly guessing the timing. In fact, it seems dependent on specifically, not being able to. Believers in the first few centuries, if they had assumed His return meant they need only be relatively ready, would have been just as wrong as someone today who uses "it's been taking a long time" as a reason to check out and disengage.

I'd actually go a step further. I think their urgency, even if the timeline itself turned out to be mistaken, was probably part of what made the gospel spread as serious and as far as it did in those early centuries. They weren't operating out of thoughts of delay, or procrastination, or a kind of quiet nihilism where it doesn't really matter what you do because nothing's really imminent anyway. That urgency drove people to act, not to wait around. So even a mistaken sense of "this could be very soon" produced something genuinely good. I think the lesson isn't "go figure out when this is going to happen." It's "stay ready and stay urgent, regardless of when." That mentality produced good fruit then, even if on a thought timeline that turned out to be wrong, and I don't see a reason it wouldn't still produce good fruit now. However, it can also demonstrate some bad fruit as well. As we seen a lot of false prophets, and even early conspiratorial theology leaking in around all that paranoia. But, to me, it seems like that demonstrates who has a poor posture vs who has the one Christ asked for.

Hold It Loosely, Still

What I keep landing on is that Israel waited a long time too, longer than most people account for, and that the wait itself was never treated as evidence He'd forgotten or failed to follow through. The Gentile era isn't the short end of the story some people picture it as either. It's had its own long, ongoing stretch, still running, still gathering people in. And the delay itself, if we can even call it that, was never hidden from us to begin with. It was told to us ahead of time, in parables that already expected someone to grow tired of waiting.

As a Gentile myself, sitting inside this stretch of time we're still in, it doesn't actually feel unjust once I look at it this way. It feels more like I'm somewhere in the middle of something much longer than I originally assumed, not stuck at the tail end of a promise that quietly expired. Whether this generation turns out to be the last one or not isn't really something I can know, and I've made a kind of peace with not knowing it. What I can do is what every generation before mine was actually asked to do anyway, stay ready, stay faithful, and not let the length of the wait be the thing that decides whether I keep going.
